I’ve watched his interrogation half a dozen times and these are my own personal thoughts on him:
He views himself as an authority figure and seeks to deal with the police and KBI on that level. Indicates an underlying insecurity and or frustration that his cognitive capabilities are not recognised nor are his leadership skills. Self opinion as an authority figure is perhaps a manifestation of underlying insecurities of his position in life.
Needs to feel he is in control of a situation. Evident from his taking charge of the interrogation and attempts (perhaps successful) in ingratiating himself with Agent Reed and Detective Nitschke. An alleged former pupil of his as a music teacher stated that he told his students he could “control the behaviour of anyone with his music”. Also music is a structured activity, with a large element of personal control over the actual music itself. More obviously is computing, a computer can only perform that which has been programmed into it. Likely he was drawn to the latter because of that attribute. This pathology is also underlined when he stated to the decoy over the telephone, during his car journey to her that “I’m not lost, I just don’t know where you are.”
Insecurities and willingness to engage in sexually risky behaviour discretely, perhaps stems from an emotionally turbulent childhood, his controlling tendencies are a compensation mechanism for his insecurities and a lack of control over his emotional wellbeing as a child. His consistent references to his work as a live musician also indicate a need for positive validation when viewed together with other behavioural attributes.
Seldom listened to or taken seriously. He is very much aware of the gravity of the situation at the beginning of the interrogation but quickly regains his composure and attempts to control the interrogation. The empathy (perhaps not artificial) and willingness to listen of Agent Reed and Detective Nitschke results in him divulging incredibly damaging statements. Alcohol isn’t necessarily a reason for his judicial indiscretion as he was able to drive and converse without exhibiting noticeable signs of intoxication. His emotional openness when describing the female he is emotionally fixated upon who distances herself from him also indicates isolation and slack of meaningful emotional interaction with others. The interrogation was cathartic to him. Possibly evidence that he has few real friends and is emotionally distant due to fear of rejection.
Inability to form a meaningful romantic relationship. Possibly stems from his controlling tendencies. Self admittedly sexually frustrated due to his failure to initiate sexual contact at a swingers club. An alleged formed cell mate stated that Roach admitted during his incarceration that he and his wife had an open relationship and that she was successful in initiating sexual relationships whilst he was not and that she spurned his advances. Probably resulting in a lowering of his self-esteem. Described his current sexual partner as overweight and that she was only interested in him for their sexual relationship. This perhaps shows that he judges her as failing to live up to the societal standards he envisages as well as failing to adhere to his own personal standards, but settles with her as a release for his own sexual gratification. Tends to idolise specific individuals, perhaps as a result of attempting to manifest an optimal emotional state and lifestyle and not necessarily due to genuine romantic feelings. See’s his romantic and sexual interests as reflections of himself. Hence his adulation of the unattainable and dismissal of that which he has. That he attempted and failed to attract a sexual partner at a swingers club the previous night and was willing to commit criminal acts by attempting to have sex with a minor indicates that his current sexual relationship is not regular or stable. Selection of a 13 year old underlines a need to control and be in an authoritative position.
