Lorne was excited to be in Kayla's house, believing sex was imminent, but behind Kayla, a tall and handsome man with a professional aura revealed his presence and shattered his disillusion. Lorne knew he was fucked. He will be arrested or hurt, possibly even both. Chris approaches Lorne, who is frozen by the fear of the incoming ass-whopping from the statuesque man. That didn’t happen. Instead, Chris sits-down and makes himself comfortable to begin interviewing Lorne. At no point does it enter Lorne's mind to ask if Chris was law enforcement and officially arresting him or even to try to runaway, since Chris was relaxed on his recliner and reading excerpts of Lorne's perverted chat, thus giving Lorne an opportunity to rush towards the exit. Why?
I've always wondered why the predators didn't just leave when Chris Hansen entered the room. You would think flight from danger would be their natural instinct, especially if they were introverts or losers. Obviously, if Chris had said stop or freeze, then I can understand why they would think he was law enforcement instead of an enraged father, but I can't believe they didn't follow up with, "are you a cop?" "am I under arrest?" ,or even, "I plead the fifth." To actually stay seated or stand in place and answer Chris' questions is beyond stupid, and possibly a dangerous choice if it turned out that Chris was the father. Being scared or stupid isn't much of an excuse because they were coherent, for the most part, and interacted normally with Chris.
Pleading the fifth, asking for a lawyer, or not speaking to police has been commonsense for a longtime, especially because of pop culture and the media. Remember, "Cops" was a big show for a longtime, the media had extensively covered many major court cases, including those involving celebrities like O.J., by the time of TCAP, and many movies and t.v. shows had explored the interactions between law enforcement and criminals. Even if you are an ignoramus, pop culture should have inserted in your head that you always keep your mouth shut when talking to police or to ask for an attorney immediately before talking to police. It surprises me they spoke with Chris, some even for almost an hour. Once Chris revealed himself, the first thought should have been "jail", the second thought should have been "lawyer", and that should have been more than enough to remember, whether from a scene from a gangster movie, a line from a song, or an episode from a crime drama, to ask for a lawyer or keep your mouth shut.
As for fear, look at Rabbi Kaye when he first meets Chris, that was fear, but he recovers and does the smart thing too, that being asking for an identity, but he doesn't fucking leave when Chris refuses to answer. Walter "sick son of a bitch" Babst also demonstrates his quick-thinking by asking if he is under arrest, and Chris smartly avoids giving a direct answer, but Babst didn't follow up with "well I'm leaving if you don't place me under arrest." For example a burglar caught committing the crime wouldn't just stand there and answer the homeowners questions regarding his motive for ransacking the home or just wait until police arrive to arrest him, especially if the owner isn't pointing a gun at the burglar. No way that would happen. The burglar, regardless of intelligence or commonsense, would immediately runaway from the scene in fear of being arrested or even being hurt by the owner. So why wouldn't the predators just runaway from the home after being caught trying to have sex with an underage girl. If they had frozen in place and didn't interact with Chris at all, then yes, that would be fear taking over their bodies and mind, but no, they actually managed to hold a conversation with Chris and maintain their composure.
To end my rant, I am glad they didn't do the obvious, especially Lorne, but it has always mystified me why would someone not try to leave from the danger or shut their mouth when questioned by police. The show shattered the stereotype of what a child molester looked like, as those who entered the house were of various intelligence and socioeconomic status. It also revealed how people, regardless of their intelligence or socioeconomic status, as mentioned before, are unable to act upon their commonsense and instead make a big problem even worse. I find that to be an interesting human quirk and seeing it happen before our eyes was very satisfying. I am curious what are your thoughts regarding this matter, am I wrong or right? Do you have anything to add or correct? I want to hear from you guys on this topic.
