This thread was suggested by Tixxx Tixxx. The question here is how does Lorne continue to fall for catfish after catfish? From what Lorne has disclosed in the calls, I can count at least four times Lorne has been deceived in some way or another by online conversation partners (Amanda James, some girl from New York, Paula, Ember) and knows he's been deceived. He still believes in Ramona. We know that Ramona had been talking to Lorne for months as a solo project and only many months into the relationship did any calls start to appear online. Also, Lorne has received a letter from someone telling him that Ramona was fake. Additionally, Ramona has not told him her last name, or even video chatted with him. All she has given him are three photos. But Lorne still holds out hope that she's real and proclaims his love for her. Lorne seemed upset about the some of the Lorne/Ramona calls ending up online, but Ramona seems to have placated him by claiming her phone was hacked and feigning anger over it. (She also used the opportunity to bring up the Michelle Simpon cheating attempt by suggesting that was what led to her phone being hacked).
The question here to discuss is how does Lorne continue to put his faith in what is a (seemingly) obvious catfish? Especially given the fact that, at least from what I can tell, every female he has interacted with online for an extended period of time has deceived him. He has never mentioned an internet relationship where he went on to meet the girl he was speaking with. I think part of it is just that Lorne is desperate for someone to love -- within days of chatting with Kayla, he claimed to love her and was discussing marriage. He started to be possessive and controlling of her and became emotionally dependent on her. Even little issues like their quibble over the two different photos Kayla sent him -- one girl with a gap in her teeth, one girl without a gap -- Lorne was obviously incredibly anxious even after Kayla stopped talking to him for as little as like 10 minutes. His jealousy over Derek was so over the top that it's comical. His intense jealousy and insecurity obviously remain in his relationship with Ramona i.e. the doctah and the therapist.
I've read a few people write that they think Lorne knows it's fake but still keeps talking to Ramona because he's a glutton for punishment and enjoys it. But I'm not so sure. Lorne strikes me as too narcissistic to be able to enjoy an experience where his flaws, transgressions, and issues are being pointed out constantly. To me, there is obviously some deep emotional need that Lorne has that is making him act in such an abnormal way. At this point, I feel like even when he finds out Ramona is fake, as he eventually will, I think, he will still be proclaiming his love to the next catfish within a few days of chatting with her. I think part of his susceptibility to online catfishing is the fact that Lorne isn't very bright but his emotional neediness and clinginess probably plays a bigger role than pure gullibility or stupidity.
This is all a bit rambly -- I apologize for that. If anyone would like to add, I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on this. Do you think Lorne is just too stupid to realize he's being taken for a ride? If not, why do you think he plays along?
