Part 10: Go On With My Life
(Male) And if things would've went... would've went differently tonight, and we were not here, do you think you could have had a relationship with Cheyenne? Do you think there was enough connection there, you could have a relationship with her?
(Jim) Uh, I think it's too early.
(Male) You felt connected. You did feel connected to her?
(Jim) I felt connected to her, but I, I was, it was, it was too fast.
(Male) Too fast.
(Jim) We would've been one of those things where we sat down and have, have the iced tea, and then I went home. Um... and that's what's so bad about this. (THAT is the bad part!? - Ed.) Cause... that's where I was. Maybe she wasn't the same where, the same area, but, I , or whoever it is... but for me, I, I just... I really was not trying to... It's not this (wiggles fingers villainously) predator trying to get kids.
(Male) Yeah, and Jim...
(Reid) (crosstalk) Oh, and, and, you...
(Male) Jim, I mean, we done went over that, and...
(Jim) Okay, but, but , the point is, you still think that. There's there's some sense of that...
(Male) But Jim, if you made a mistake, I can handle you made a mistake tonight.
(Jim) I did not contrive this, this girl into, to, to having sex with me. What I did, what I did was I tried to, to meet with her...
(Male) To help her out.
(Jim) To help her out in what she needs to do. She's going through some stuff with her... If, if that's really true...
(Male) And that's...
(Jim) And then... I still go on with my life.
(Male) And that's different from a predator.
(Jim) Yeah. Well, I hope so!
(Male) It takes... it takes... you know, Jim, I see the difference, okay?
(Jim) I hope so, because I'm certainly not...
(Reid) There's a clear distinction there.
(Jim) Okay, well... I just, uhh, y'know... I, I, I, I don't want that clapped on top of me... (sigh) I've spent many, many years.. Not, not keeping away from it, but being aware that it's out there? And JUST being careful? And then and then to, to fall on this, is like... (shakes head)
(Reid) Well, you've not had any issues before.
(Jim) No. Not at all. Not at all. But, but, but, the thing is - music teacher? Elementary school? (exhale) There's, there's magnitudes of shit out there for that. And, and, things like this, if this would ever had happened to me, I would, I would be fired from West Claremont immediately. Because of the fact that there is that stigma. And because of the fact that (licks lips)... I know. I'm since retired, so it doesn't matter... (shrugs) But I, but I, but you should know that! You should know that (he does air quotes for some reason) "those qualifications" that come along with that territory... and it's not just music teachers, it's other teachers as well. Any male teachers in the elementary grades...
(Jim trails off. He can't finish this thought - he seems to be arguing that the police shouldn't pursue cases like this against teachers of young children, because it might wreck their careers. Which is ridiculous, and abhorrent, and I think even drunken Jim realizes this.)
(Male) And - like I said - I don't consider you in that category.
(Jim) Yeah. (nods)
(The interview pivots from here. They're basically done interrogating him at this point, and want to move on to logistical matters. Unfortunately, Jim is not finished talking.)
(Male) And.. while I'm here, is there anything - I don't expect to find anything - but is there anything in your vehicle that, that I should know about, or anything?
(Jim) I don't think so.
(Male) Would you mind if any of the officers would look through, to see if...
(Jim) Oh, no, no, no, absolutely, not at all.
(Male) Okay, so you don't mind if they look through your vehicle...
(Jim) If they fill up my tires with air! (Laughs)
(At this point, he still truly thinks he's walking away from this.)
(Male) (caught off guard, but plays along) Well, I will ask them, I will ask them, but I, but I don't know what you'll get!
(Jim) No, no, no, I say that because my light came on. My air pressure's out!
(Male) Well, I, I'll let 'em know...
(Jim) No. No, there is not a damn thing in that car.
(Male) But you don't mind if they take a look...
(Reid) You don't mind them searching...
(Jim) Not at all.
(Reid) You want me to go get the those forms?
(Male) Yeah, you...
(Jim) I don't do drugs. I don't do THAT kinda thing. I do drink! But. Heh heh heh heh heh!
(Reid) I'll be right back!
(Jim) Yeah. Okay.
(Reid) Can you hand me my papers, if you don't mind...
(Male) Sure.
(Reid) I'll be back. (she exits)
