A warning about Chris Hansen.
Since the site brings in hundreds of new and old fans of TCAP, HvP, police interview, bait car and similar shows we would fell irresponsible to not publish a warning about showman Chris Hansen.
We advise people to not send money to Hansen, sign up for his 'services' or participate in his kickstarters. He is a serial scammer and will rip you off. He was arrested in 2019 for defrauding a store for thousands of dollars, kicked out of his apartment for failing to pay rent and never sent out the kickstarter prizes he should have, even the ones that did not cost any money like a recording of him saying "have a seat". He does have time to sell greetings online for 50$ a piece though.
Hansen has also taken 100% original content from other youtube channels and posted them as his own on his youtube channel Hansen vs Predator, and then filed copyright claims against the crator. An award winning journalist stealing other peoples work and claiming it is his own, is actually much more serious than the youtube drama surrounding it might indicate.
Long have we discussed Hansens criminal record, arrest records and various stories of scams before deciding to publish this warning. We're not really involved, nor have been a direct victim, but to not issue a warning would be like a Star Trek fan site not warning people about William Shatner scamming his fans.
Below follows a quick Q&A about the situation.
Q: Are you talking about the award winning tv-reporter Chris Hansen?
A: Yes. The NBC host of To Catch a Predator (2004-2008) and Hansen vs Predator (2016) and other investigative pieces.
Q: Was Hansen really arrested for fraud?
A: Yes. As widely reported by major news outlets. After dodging a 13000$ bill for over a year with vague promises, and a warning from the police he was arrested in 2019. His mugshot is pictured below.
TMZ did a piece on it. As did Huffpo and even his old employer NBC. And many many other youtubers.
Q: What is Hansens marital state?
A: Hansen was divorced in 2019 after numerous affairs and cheating on his wife. Judging from his twitter feed he switches between living at his girlfriends house and an office he borrows from a friend.

dlisted.com/2019/01/19/chris-hansen-got-evicted-from-his-apartment-and-his-divorce-is-being-finalized/
Q: What is Hansens employment status?
A: Hansen was fired from NBC because he was caught in a "sting" by reporters who stalked him as he was cheating with a woman from work. While it might seem trivial for people with other types of professions, NBC was upset and got rid of him. He might also have been difficult to work with and had an alcohol problem at the time, but this is just speculation. NBC cited his cheating when they fired him. He then worked briefly for Crime Watch daily, and now guest stars on "Cheaters" and tries to pimp youtube live streams where he has little of value to say.
Q: Does Hansen have an alcohol problem?
A: There is no evidence for that. He has never appeared drunk or even intoxicated when on-screen. There are speculations he might be an alcoholic, because he looked like one when he appeared in his 2016 Hansen vs Predator reboot of the To Catch a Predator show. He had a bloated and red face. A distended gut and general unhealthy look. He's pushing 60 though, and it might just be a symptom of age and a general unhealthy lifestyle.
Q: Does Hansen have a drug problem?
A: Around 2010 Hansen was valued at 12.5 million dollars net worth. But is valued at 100 000$ as of 2019. While these two net worths may indicate he has spent lots of money on -something- it is probably not drugs, as even a 30 000$ a month coke habit would not burn through all that money in a decade.
There are some who thinks he might be on adderall, due to a few comments he makes to predators caught on his show, i.e. "Thats a lot of adderal [that you're using]", as if he speaks from experience. But this is just speculation, and in any case legal prescription drugs.
Q:Does Hansen have a gambling problem?
A: There is no -hard- evidence for this. Famous youtuber Theo Vonn had Hansen on his show, and paid for Hansen to stay in a luxury hotel. Theo hinted at Hansen having gamling issues.
Hansen has also been photographed repeatedly in Las Vegas, drunk as a clunk on the strip. Gambling addiction might fit with Hansens "pay you tomorrow" lifestyle, and explain how he spent all his money.
It should be mentioned that Hansen has had a very expensive life style, and even flew one of his lovers across the country in a 4 month luxury hotel trek, before she got tired of his empty promises of leaving his wife.
Q: Did Hansen cheat on his wife?
A: Yes. He was caught with a woman 20 years younger. People tried to conflate it with the predators on his show, which is bullshit. The chick he was banging was legal. There also were some other cases of infidelity and a few pics of him stone drunk making out with random women. He also suposedly sent dick pics after a drunken one night stand with a woman who ridiculed the 50 year old man for his lack of sexual endurance. Who knows, and who cares. But his moral integrity is in the shitter.
Q: What is Hansens financial status?
A: Hansen is not only dead broke, but deep in debt. An Indianapolis radio station has described Hansen as in " financial ruin ". His old house is now owned by the bank. He has been evicted from his apartment, has had his car repossessed and his checks bounce. His phone number is registered in his son's name. He owed 1.8 million $ in 2019.
How do we know this? When Hansen was arrested for bouncing bad checks to a vendor that he dodged for over a year, his financial debts were released by major news outlets.
Interestingly, Hansen did an article/interview with Elizabeth Warren in 2009 about the nations credit card debts. He also did another 2009 piece about Catching a Mortage Predator. So he should know better than to get suckered into that trap. We must therefore assume he has been self destructive financially when obtaining credit card debt he knew he could repay.
It turned out he was sued for
$1,074,689 to US bank trust. $126,356.35 to TD Bank. $57,931.72 to American Express. $15,000 to Ally Financial. He's also reportedly at least $250,000 behind on his taxes -
This means Hansen has about 1,8 million dollars in debt. This is only the sum he has been sued for, he might have other credit cards that he has kept in check with the minimum payments, and probably owes money to his land lord after the eviction.
A separate court order issued in May said Hansen’s house in Stamford was the subject of a “strict foreclosure,” not a sale. Records show the home is now owned by a bank.
Anyone with debt experience knows the 1 million to US bank trust is probably a mortage. The rest is unsecured debt that has very high interest rates. Hansen was sued by American Express in 2015 after the charge card giant claimed he owed nearly $58,000, the Connecticut Post writes. And Hansen's 2014 Chevrolet Corvette reportedly was repossessed by Ally Financial after he stopped paying on it in 2017.
His financial status makes is very unlikely he is able to fund or create another "investigation" in the style of TCAP or HvP. Even getting to ride along with the cops for a sting like the HvP "season 2" single episode is unlikely, as he would need a camera crew and post-production crew, and these are not cheap.
Q: Ok. Hansen is financially desperate. So what?
A: In desperate search of money Hansen has been caught doing the following scams:
The kickstarter scam: Hansen crowdfunded the HvP season in 2015-16. He was to raise 75 000$, but got 89 000$. Instead of delivering on his promises, he neither sent out the perks promised to the backers, nor made the show available for them. Instead, Hansen sold the show to a TV channel called Crime Watch Daily, which hired him for a few months, before they too fired him. Most kickstarter backers felt cheated, and even talked about a class action lawsuit. The entire article about it can be found here, and should be read in full for anyone who still thinks Hansen has any integrity: www.nydailynews.com/news/ny-news-chris-hansen-legal-woes-20190118-story.html
The mom 'n pop store scam: Hansen ordered the fundraiser perks, 355 ceramic mugs, 288 shirts and 650 vinyl decals from a small vendor. These were never sent out to the backers; presumably Hansen kept the money paid for shipping. He never paid the vendor either, resulting in his arrest for larcency. The documents for Hansens arrest are public and have been released. He pleads with the vendor for more time and says "Being arrested will be the end of me", and also tries to bullshit the cop who arrested him and interviews him. Presumably Hansen managed to borrow the 13 000$, because he paid the vendor in full after his arrest.
His website scam: In 2019 Hansen launched his website www.hansenvspredators.com For a monthly fee, members could get access to new material by Hansen. Hansen released one video (which was arguably of very high quality and interest fans), and did not publish anything new after that. He pops back on twitter or youtube every week and promises that "new and exciting investigations are coming very soon," but after half a year, nobody believes him. The site does not even come close to delivering what it promises, and for 90$ a year, it certainly is flat out a scam by now. See his kickstarter scam.
Hansens hacking scam: In 2019 several youtubers critical to Hansens failure to deliver new material on the website where they paid for their subscription was doxxed. The names came from the subscribers list, which are paid for by credit card/paypal. Team Hansen claimed they were "hacked", an excuse about as likely as the fairy fucking godmother doing it, especially when the "we were hacked" has been used over and over again. No matter where one thinks Hansen stands legally, he does not dispute the doxxing, which says it all, donnit?
Hansens copyright scam: Hansen has misused youtube's copyright strike system to claim videos he certainly does not own. It is comparable to calling the cops saying someone stole your shit when they didnt. This can probably be ascribed to Hansens failure to understand the internet world. More about this under the next Q.
The Theo Von scam: Hansen appeared on a youtuber channel, and tried to exploit them by staying longer at the luxury hotel, run up a tab and raid the minibar. www.reddit.com/r/FansHansenvsPredator/comments/cx7ldb/story_about_theo_von_getting_ripped_off_by_chris/
We could probably mention Hansen scamming the bank for the monthly payment on his car, scamming his wife during his marriage and so on, but that would only dillute the gross and intentional rip offs that he has done the past year. It should be clear that anyone who gets into contact with Hansen gets ripped off or flamed in some way.
Q: Does Hansen really steal youtube videos, and then post them on his own channel?
A: Yes. His current channel Hansen vs Predators has several top viewed videos that has been simply copied straight from other tcap channels, often with 100% unique content. Hansen is especially prolific in stealing police interviews that others have gained from FOIA and put hours of work into cleaning up the audio and image.
Not only that, but Hansen has in two waves then sent copyright strikes against the original channels, getting them suspended.
The criminality of this cannot be overstated! An award winning journalist stealing other peoples work and formally claiming it as his own.
His Youtube illegal strikes are possible, he boasts on his own channel, is because he knows an FBI agent who knows one of the 'top 5 people' at youtube. Or more likely, he just has the ear of some desk slave over at Youtube.
Q: Is Hansen a skilled reporter?
A: The truth is that anyone who observes Hansen outside his prepped and edited tv-appearances, will see a man of very average intelligence. According to his admission, he does not know how youtube works. He displays utter lack of understanding about copyright laws (insisting he has copyright to material that is clearly owned by NBC, in the public domain or -as in one case- a home made video by a guy filming himself reading a book-). He gets caught cheating all the time, gets confused when talking with his guests on his youtube channel and has no financial control at all. If you did not see him smash a few hundred sexual predators on tv, you would probably think he was somewhere between hillbilly and retarded redneck intelligence.
To reconcile the astute, clever Hansen we know from the show, with such hapless behaviour is difficult, but hey even Tom Cruise looks 7 feet tall on the tv screen. A good example of how dim witted Hansen actually is, is his interview with famous TCAP youtuber MistaGG. Hansen spends the whole interview struggling to even understand what GG is doing and how he got viewers, a fact GG politely termed as Hansen looking for inside tips, but painfully evident to most as Hansen not understanding the subject matter at all.
The list is nearly endless regarding Hansens out of touch mentality. He reads lolcow as L-O-L cow, struggles to turn off his camera when live-streaming and saying he has "exclusive news" when dropping a 30 second twitter vid stating Epstein is dead, a couple of hours after CNN reported on it. Especially the latter example displays journalistic shortcomings which makes even baby jesus cry.
Hansen has been mocked severely by far larger (web) personalities than the members of this site. Some have even tried to help him. Gus Johnson who has 1.7 million subs made a video joking about how Hansen was going about his youtube channel all wrong. In return Hansen blocked him, proving Gus Johnson right. Both videos are very educational for those who doubt Hansens lack of capabilities. The main issues was that Hansen was uploading other peoples videos, such as Oprah interviews, NBC footage and even just flat our ripping other peoples videos off and reposting them on his channel like some nigerian ad spider.
When Hansen eventually began getting copyright strikes from youtubers who had uploaded and created the content in the first place, he simply began copyright striking them back. He then went on to copyright strike anyone who had ever mentioned tcap in a video, even guys just reading a poem or similar nonsens. Since Hansen was able to abuse the YT copyright system as badly as he did, copyright striking over 400 videos he certainly did not own, it may be assumed he managed to scam youtube into believing he was acting honestly. A lot of drama resulted from this, again with youtube reaction negatively to Hansen, who gloated in a twitter vid he released. A few examples are: The list endless, and however one may think Hansen stands legally, it is pretty retarded to end up in a flame war with your own fans over a few stolen videos posted on youtube. You dont see Henry Cavill copyright striking people who review or parody Batman vs Superman on youtube, do you? Pure incompetence can be the only explanation.
Q: How much does Hansen know about TCAP and TCAP fandom?
A: Hansen seem to consider the prizes he won in the mid 2000s to be the greatest praise for his work. He has failed to properly appreciate police or perverted justice and their hard work, rather claiming that Hansen himself "did the investigation", which is not very truthfull. NBC may have paid for the stings, but at no point did Hansen do anything with the chat work or stings themselves. He is seen being handed a copy of the chat log minutes before the predator arrives, with sexual comments highlighted in magic marker. The uncut footage available shows a slow and unsure Hansen slowly reading through the chat log before reading whatever he finds of interest on the spot.
To this must be added that Hansen does not seem particular bright or reflected when it comes to the predators, and gives stock reasons for why they "come to have sex with a child". He also failed to remember more than a very few names and men caught on the show, which shows that he was not really that involved in pre- or post-production of the TCAP show. He has failed to discuss predators in real time in any meaningful way and seem to not really know much about the show he used to host.
Hansen seem to be in the dark about what tcap fandom is, and exactly who content creators are, or what the appeal of the show is to todays fans. That he got involved in a flame war with 20-30 of the largest fan channels and managed to get many of them removed (briefly) from youtube shows his lack of understanding about how an online fandom works. He has also insisted his biggest fans are "a small underground minority" once they complained that he was just ripping their videos and work from their channels and re uploading them without crediting them on his site.
Q: What is Hansen doing today?
A: He runs his website scam, promising "new" investigations anytime soon. He also runs a youtube channel Pleasehaveaseat, where he live streams discussions in the youtube drama community, insisting he has inside information that this guy or that is a sexual predator. This channel has weekly shows, and he gets some views. About 80% of the videos are about Hansen endlessly "investigating" youtuber Onision, who may seem a little shady, but if there is so much evidence, why dont people go to the police? Is it very likely that Hansen will somehow uncover evidence while livestreaming in front of his web cam?
He cant make any money from his youtube channel either, because his one trademark word "predator" automatically demonetizes any video.
He also appears as a guest host on "To catch a cheater" which is ironic, but surprisingly good. His charm in front of the camera and faux sincere face in what is essentially a scripted show is admittedly pretty good.
Hansen is also working out fairly often, as seen on his twitter feed, and seems to be in much better shape than in 2016.
Q: What are the chances of new investigations like HvP or TCAP?
A: Sadly, zero.
The TCAP show was organized with volunteer organization Perverted Justice doing all the chat work (for $900 000). NBC paying all the production costs (in the millions of dollars) and various police departments allowing them to tag along for the stings or however you want to view it. Hansen was just the guy reading the chat log back to the predators showing up, knowing that he had armed bodyguards like Ron Knight and cops in the other room to bust in if anything went awry.
HvP relied on volunteer group Tetrad Core to do the chat work for free, fans paying Hansen $90k and on a friendly Police Department letting Hansen tag along. Tetrad Core fell apart shortly after for different reasons, and the fans are not likely to crowdfund another sting. There are currently no group operating in the US with the skill level of Perverted Justice or Tetrad Core, so unless Hansen teams up with youtube vigilantee groups like Creep Catchers and similar groups, there will never be another investigation.
Q: What should I do if Hansen solicits money from me?
A: Dont give it to him. He will never deliver on his promises and if you demand a refund he might (according to others who have donated to him) doxxx you and possibly your job too, and try to turn his remaining fans against you.
Q: Where can I read more about Hansen?
A: Here is a list that took five minutes to assemble. More on Hansens crimes and dodgy actions can be found elsewhere.
