In 2022, in the town of Slaughter, Louisiana, police were called to the home of Sheila Fletcher and Clay Fletcher, who had reported that their daughter was not breathing.
Lacey was found by coroners fused to the family couch when they arrived.
When Lacey was found on the couch, she was inside of an 18-inch deep crater on the couch that had rotted away after prolonged exposure to human waste. The only things found in her stomach were faecal matter, and yellow foam from the couch, which she likely ate in an attempt to stay alive. Maggots were present in Lacey's skin, wounds, genitals and hair. Lacey was so malnourished, she weighed barely 43 kilograms (96 pounds) upon discovery. She had portions of bone visible whilst still alive. Her body had rotted away in the lower back and buttock region so heavily, many first responders couldn't tell what part of the body they were looking at. All the first responders, including the coroner, had to have therapy after witnessing the scene. Despite the state she was found in, she was dead less than 48 hours at the time of the report.
Lacey was kept in this state for over twelve years.
Her parents were noted on the case as barely expressing any emotion when the first responders arrived. The coroner on the scene, and the former family physician, Ewell DeWitt Bickham, a medical practitioner for over 40 years, described the case as the most traumatising thing he'd ever seen. He claimed the sight caused him to cry every day for a week, and stopped him from eating for a week.
In February of 2024, Lacey's parents, Sheila and Clay, both 66 years of age, were sentenced to 20 years in prison for manslaughter. Given the nature of their crimes and their current ages, it's unlikely they'll live to the end of their sentences.
On a personal note, this case is one of the most grim, depressing and infuriating things I have ever read. Clay and Sheila Fletcher treated their daughter in a way I can only describe as less than inhuman. Animals don't treat other animals like this. Even some of the most depraved murderers and serial killers don't treat their victims like this, and they, through apparent inaction, treated their only daughter, their own flesh and blood this way. And what's more, is that they were functional members of society. Sheila was the vice mayor of Slaughter, and Clay was an officer of the Baton Rouge Civil War Roundtable. They were clearly capable of taking care of Lacey, or at least getting someone else to do so, and decided not to. And furthermore, I have seen the coroner's photographs of Lacey. I will not post them here, but if you want to find them, they're pretty easy to find. But take this from me, as someone with a strong constitution and high disgust tolerance, those images are burned into my mind, and will be until the day I die.
