I’m on the final season of King of the Hill and, yeah, I’m definitely happy I’ve spent the last few months (re)watching it. There’s some major pacing/character development issues I have with the later seasons but so much of the show still holds up. Luanne definitely deserved better, though I do like Lucky.
It’s gonna be interesting to see what their plan is with the new show. I’m in favor of a time jump but maybe one that has Bobby around 20 rather than, say, 35-40. Though I do trust Mike Judge.
It seemed like the show changed after the Miss Wakefield episode. From there on out, it developed a bit of a darker feel. I also didn't like them killing off Cotton. It's still one of my favorites though.
The reason why I really like Seasons 2-4 is there’s a constant sense of character development similar to what Futurama did pre-cancellation. Luanne moves out, Nancy breaks it off with John Redcorn, there’s some more subtle changes to Bobby’s character where he’s not as naive/innocent, he has a bit of an old soul to him.
I just looked at the S5 roster and that’s where things start taking a turn. I hadn’t realized the puberty episode was the final one developed for Season 4 which makes SO much sense. S5 has episode I think you start seeing a bit of that decline like when Bill goes Christmas crazy and takes the criminal under his wing, you get the Hank/New York episode they wanted to retcon, and the mini ass story. But you also get Pimp Hank, Luanne the Virgin, Dale in HR. So you still have some hits but there’s some very strange misses.
