Yea but that’s a old school Mercedes while a Lada is a knock off of a 60s Fiat. And Fiats are major pieces of shit. A LADAs factory paint job looks like a hillbilly rattle canned it.
As long as you keep rust at bay and replace the timing chain on those OM617 engines around 300,000 miles those old school Mercedes will keep on going.
But ultimately the difference is in the USA you can own a newer car and a classic while in Russia all you’ll have is a old piece of junk.
In Russia you could have that too if you had enough money, same as here. I guarantee you I’m not driving the Benz because it’s a classic, it’s because it’s the only car I’ve got. My wife has an Asian 4 door sedan, about 10 years old. They’re more reliable than an American car.
You’re damn right about the old Benz, though. Keep the valves adjusted and stay on top of the vacuum system that runs just about everything in the car including the automatic transmission, (no manual option for the US export Benz, you win again), and like you say, it’s good for 300k plus. I’ve got only a little over 150k on mine, and that’s miles and not kilometers. As reliable as it is, knock wood, I’ll probably get another 10 years out of it.
Yea but in Russia you’re stuck where you’re at, here it’s much easier to do better. There’s more opportunities and money here. If you don’t like your job I you can find another, go back to school and get better training to do better, the possibilities here are endless.
As far as reliable, I know those old American cars/trucks are pretty robust. My 90s Chevy pickup has close to 300,000 miles and starts everyday. Newer stuff, it’s a mixed bag. But in the last few years anything old school American has really shot up in price. Here in Florida those 80s box Chevy Caprices fetch $5,000 in crappy condition.
