Not sure, but unfortunately for us, that's how it is in the newest DSM. Here's an article that talks a bit about it. I get where you're coming from though - my diagnosis was hidden from me growing up and I didn't learn the truth until adulthood. It suddenly made things make a lot more sense for me, but at the same time, it was quite a blow. I remember in my more blissfully ignorant days having a poor understanding of autism and learning disabilities, thinking they were labels that only fit people with serious problems. Finding out I was among that group was unpleasant.
