I HAVE MIXED OPINIONS, SO SORRY FOR THE RAMBLING.
First off, some backstory. When I turned 18, I was dating a girl who was 2.5 years younger than me, so she was still 15. Throughout our time of dating, which was only until a few months after my birthday, we never had sex (which is good, cause mentally I know neither of us were ready). However, if we had, it would’ve been protected legally under my states Romeo and Juliet laws. Michigan has similar laws, but they don’t protect against penetration, that is illegal.
In an objective sense, what the 18 year old did was illegal. And under that Romeo and Juliet technicality, he was not protected because he planned to penetrate her.
But in a subjective sense, c’mon. Chris catches pedophiles, and gets them off the streets. GHOST catches human traffickers and gets them off the streets. Both of those types of people are dangerous and are better off behind bars. I understand that Sean had some weird ass kinks, but it’s 2021. We can do better than kinkshaming people, Chris. I understand he was a babysitter too. But it didn’t seem like he was explicitly looking for kids*, and it didn’t seem like he would take advantage of a kid that he was babysitting. Chris kinda led him on with the “Were you excited cause she was 15?” and he was so frazzled at that point that I bet he didn’t even hear the question.
And then there’s the issue of public shaming. It’s no longer 2007, or even 2015. If the last 5 years have shown us anything, especially with things like the #MeToo movement**, people can’t escape their past. Sean’s life is over, cause any employers/romantic partners can look this up. Plus, this video will shame and humiliate him for years to come, and prevent him from having friends, basically. What he did was wrong, but this could’ve been handled, and dealt with in a healthy manner, and not blasted for views on the Internet. The trauma of what happened will ruin his life, even if the negative publicity doesn’t.
TL;DR: What Sean O’Brien did was illegal. However, he is not a pedophile IMO, and he is not a danger to children. In fact, Chris handling this in a way that will forever ruin his reputation and probably cause years of trauma when he only broke the laws on a technicality, just seems mean, and furthers the image of Chris as desperate for attention. Overall, this is a fucked up and morally gray situation. Obviously this is all my opinion, but that’s why I posted on a forum. Let me know what you guys think.
Spare thoughts: When O’Brien said he will tell his friends to “have a seat” if they are looking for 15 year olds to blank, I bet CH’s ears pricked up. Also, I don’t wanna be “that guy” but why was literally no one wearing masks? Regardless of your opinion on them, it’s weird that no one at all was wearing one. Maybe I just didn’t see them.
*I understand other young predators like Vincent Ambrosio exist, but Ambrosio was there for a fucking 12 year old. That shits messed up and Ambrosio deserves no pity.
**I support the #MeToo movement. I’m not using it as a boogeyman for people’s lives being ruined. In fact, I think owning up to consequences for your actions is important, and I also think we live in a society where men have long abused positions of authority towards those under them, primarily women.
