The news has really grabbed ahold of the border issue with the children and run, nay, sprinted with it. Every outlet is covering it like it was 9/11 again. There is so much anger and outrage it is almost physical in its manifestation. There is a lot of comparison to the Nazis and concentration camps (which I think is unfounded as I have actually talked to one person who lived through a death camp.) As we frequent this forum and it revolves around adults and minor victims I was wondering how others really feel about it. The kids are being kept in chain link cells. There is no mistaking that. There is air conditioning, toilets, food and water and toys. A far cry from Auschwitz. One of the reasons for the separation is ICE being unable to determine who really belongs to who. I mean, didn't Contraland just do a documentary about human trafficking and child smuggling? Don't we want to be sure when actual birth certificates and ID's cannot be produced? My concern is for the welfare of the children. After being drug thousands of miles through Central America they arrive at the border with adults who say they are their children. What have they already been through up until that point? What depravations have they experienced?
As an immigrant myself who's family went through the legal path to citizenship I'm not too crazy about people just coming across the border expecting the world to adapt to their needs. Some say that immigrants are good for the economy. Some say they are a drain. If you could audit Western Unions transactions for a year you would see how much money is actually leaving the US back to Mexico and Central America.
And why are they here? To escape violence and drug cartels. What can we do about that? Send our troops to do battle with drug lords and cocaleros in the jungle? I'm tired of wars where the enemy isn't clearly defined. And the governments of these countries are rife with corruption so we can expect little in way of action from them. What is the solution so that these people don't have to hike thousands of miles to what they believe is sanctuary? Thoughts?
